Salt Water Pool vs. Chlorine Pool: Which Is Right for You?

Quick answer

A salt water pool is still a chlorine pool. A salt chlorine generator turns dissolved salt into chlorine automatically, so you’re not buying and adding chlorine by hand. Salt pools feel softer and take less day-to-day work. The trade-offs are a higher upfront cost, a salt cell that eventually needs replacing, pH that tends to drift upward, and extra care around some metals and natural stone. Traditional chlorine costs less to start but needs more regular dosing.

“Should we go salt?” is one of the most common questions we hear from Hudson Valley homeowners, whether they’re planning a new pool or thinking about converting one they already have. Both systems keep water clean and safe. The right choice depends on your budget, your pool and how hands-on you want to be.

How a salt water pool works

In a salt pool, you add pool-grade salt to the water. As water flows through the salt cell, installed in the plumbing after the filter, a low electrical charge converts some of the salt into chlorine. That chlorine sanitizes the pool the same way any chlorine does, then turns back into salt, and the cycle repeats. You add more salt only to replace what’s lost to splash-out, backwashing and rain.

The water isn’t anywhere near as salty as the ocean. Hayward recommends about 3,200 ppm of salt for its Aqua Rite system, with a working range of 2,700–3,400 ppm. Ocean water is about 35,000 ppm, according to the USGS, so a salt pool has roughly a tenth as much salt.

The benefits of a salt water pool

  • Steadier chlorine levels. The generator produces chlorine continuously, so you avoid the peaks and valleys of manual dosing.
  • Less handling and storing of chlorine. You aren’t carrying buckets of tablets or jugs of liquid all summer.
  • Softer-feeling water. Many swimmers find salt water gentler on their eyes and skin.
  • Lower chemical spending over time. Hayward says salt chlorination can save up to 50% compared with traditional chlorine. Your actual savings depend on pool size and use.

The downsides to consider

  • Higher upfront investment. The system and installation cost more than a traditional chlorine setup.
  • The cell wears out. Salt cells need regular inspection and cleaning, and eventually replacement. Many owners get about five to seven years from a cell, depending on use and water balance.
  • pH creeps up. Salt pools tend to push pH higher, so you’ll add acid more often to keep it in the 7.2–7.8 range.
  • Salt and certain materials don’t mix. Hayward notes that too much salt can be corrosive to decks, railings and equipment. Proper salt levels, bonding and grounding matter.
  • Shoulder-season gaps. In our Hudson Valley springs and falls, water can drop below the temperature where the cell works, so you may need to add some chlorine by hand early and late in the season.

Is salt right for your pool?

Salt systems are a popular upgrade for in-ground pools, including vinyl-liner pools. Before converting an existing pool, and especially an above-ground pool or any pool with metal walls, ladders or a heater, check that your pool and equipment are rated for salt and that converting won’t affect your warranties. If you have natural stone coping or a stone patio next to the pool, factor that in too.

Good news if you already have a chlorine pool: converting usually doesn’t require draining. The cell and controller are added to your existing equipment, the right amount of salt is added to the water, and the system takes over from there.

Maintaining a salt water pool

  1. Test salt levels regularly and top up after heavy rain, backwashing or refilling.
  2. Watch your pH and lower it as needed. This is the biggest routine job in a salt pool.
  3. Keep stabilizer in range. Hayward recommends about 80 ppm of cyanuric acid for Aqua Rite systems, to protect the chlorine the cell makes from sunlight.
  4. Inspect and clean the cell. Hayward recommends checking it about every three months for scale buildup.
